How to Resize a Photo to 20 KB or 50 KB for an Online Form

Online application forms for exams, government services, visas and jobs often reject photos that are too big. Typical rules are a photo of 20–50 KB and a signature of 10–20 KB, usually as JPG, sometimes with exact pixel dimensions too. A phone photo is 2–5 MB, so it has to be made 50–200 times smaller.

Step 1: Read the form's exact rules

Look for three things in the instructions: the maximum file size (for example "max 50 KB"), any minimum size (some forms also reject files under 10 KB), and the dimensions (for example "200 × 230 pixels" or "3.5 cm × 4.5 cm"). Note the file type as well; JPG is the most common.

Step 2: Crop the photo first

Crop to just your face and shoulders (or just the signature) in your phone's gallery app. Cropping removes pixels nobody needs, so the final photo stays much sharper at a small size.

Step 3: Resize to the file size

  1. Open Resize image.
  2. Add the cropped photo. iPhone HEIC photos work too.
  3. Keep File size (KB) selected and tap 20 KB, 50 KB or the size your form asks for, or type it in.
  4. Keep the format on JPG and press Resize images.

The tool finds the highest quality that stays under your limit, and only reduces the pixel size when it has to. Your photo isn't uploaded anywhere while this happens.

If the form also wants exact pixels

Do it in two passes: first switch to Pixels, untick Keep proportions, and enter the exact width and height (for example 200 × 230). Download that, then add the result again and resize it to the file size in KB.

Forms that give a size in centimetres usually mean a passport-style proportion. At 100 pixels per centimetre, 3.5 × 4.5 cm is 350 × 450 pixels.
