How to Compress a PDF to 100 KB or 200 KB for Online Forms
Open Compress PDFFree · works in your browser · no upload→Government portals, job applications, university admissions and visa forms often cap uploads at 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB. A phone scan of a single page can easily be 2–5 MB, so the form rejects it. This guide shows how to get under the limit while keeping the document readable.
Why some PDFs are so big
Almost all of the size of a scanned PDF comes from the page images. A photo taken at 12 megapixels and saved into a PDF keeps every one of those pixels, far more than anyone needs to read a document. Text-only PDFs made from Word are usually small already (often under 100 KB), and compressing them won't save much.
Method 1: Compress the PDF in your browser
- Open Compress PDF on your phone or computer.
- Add your PDF. Nothing is uploaded; the work happens on your device.
- Choose a level. Balanced suits most documents. For a strict 100 KB limit, choose Strong.
- For ID cards, certificates and forms, tick black & white. Removing colour often halves the size again.
- Press Compress PDF. You'll see the old and new size before you download.
Still too big? Run Strong with black & white, and check that the PDF has only the pages the form asks for.
Method 2: Remove pages you don't need
If a form only wants the first page of your passport or the front of a certificate, send only that page. Use Split PDF to keep, for example, just page 1, then compress the result. Each page you remove saves roughly its share of the file size.
Method 3: Start from a smaller image
If you're creating the PDF from photos, crop the photo to the document edges first, then use JPG to PDF. A cropped photo of a card is a fraction of the size of a photo that includes the whole table.
Rough sizes to expect
| Document | Typical after Strong + black & white |
|---|---|
| 1-page ID or certificate scan | 40–120 KB |
| 3-page form scan | 120–350 KB |
| 10-page scanned contract | 400 KB–1.2 MB |
Results vary with how busy the page is; plain white paper compresses far better than coloured backgrounds or photos.
Things to check before you upload
- Readability: zoom in on small print, dates and ID numbers. If they're blurry, use Balanced instead of Strong.
- Selectable text: compression saves each page as an optimized image, so text can't be selected afterwards. Forms almost never need selectable text, but keep your original copy.
- File name: some portals reject names with spaces or symbols. Rename to something simple like
passport-page1.pdf.
