How to Sign a PDF Without Printing It
Open Sign PDFFree · works in your browser · no upload→Printing a document, signing it with a pen and scanning it back takes time and produces a blurry, oversized file. You can add a clean signature directly to the PDF instead.
Sign in your browser (any device)
- Open Sign PDF and add your document.
- Draw your signature with your finger, a stylus or the mouse, or type your name and pick a handwriting style.
- Go to the page that needs the signature and drag the signature into place. Resize it to fit the signature line.
- Optionally add today's date next to it.
- Save the signed PDF and send it back.
The document stays on your device while you sign it.
On a Mac with Preview
Open the PDF in Preview, click the Markup (pen) icon, then the Signature button. You can create a signature with the trackpad, or by holding a signature on white paper up to the camera.
On iPhone
Open the PDF in the Files app or from Mail, tap the Markup icon, then + → Signature.
Tips for a signature that looks right
- Use a stylus or a phone to draw. A mouse signature usually looks shaky.
- Draw it large, then shrink it on the page. Small drawings look jagged when resized.
- Sign every place that's marked: forms often need initials on each page as well as a signature on the last one.
Is an electronic signature legally valid?
In many countries, including the UAE, the UK, the EU and the US, electronic signatures are legally recognised for most everyday agreements. Some documents still need a wet-ink signature, a certified digital signature or a notary, for example certain property, court or government documents. If you're unsure, ask whoever requested the signature which type they accept.
